What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound, which was initiated in 1965, is a federal pre-college program designed to help selected students complete high school, enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

Upward Bound offers extensive academic instruction as well as counseling, mentoring, career search, financial aid search, and other support services. Students meet throughout the school year and participate in an intensive residential summer program at WITCC for six weeks. Students generally participate from their ninth grade year through their senior year of high school.

Application for participation in the program is competitive and several factors are taken into consideration including, but not limited to:

  • parent(s) who have not graduated from a 4-year college
  • family income levels
  • educational needs
  • educational goals of the applicant
  • ability to be fully committed to participation
